Ryan Aerospace and PFC are pleased to launch the HELIMOD Mark III, an innovative and affordable new type of helicopter simulator targeted at teaching pilots the art of vertical reference and managing external sling loads. A demonstrator recently used at Heli-Expo in Las Vegas was very well-received by long line pilots – many citing that they wished there was such a product when they were learning how to long line.

The Virtual Reality (VR) head-mounted display puts you directly in the pilot’s seat of virtually any aircraft* (left OR right seat). There is a full sense of immersion brought about by the 3D, stereoscopic nature of the VR goggles. The pilot has the ability to “look around” the aircraft and more importantly, can lean out the side and look directly underneath the helicopter (such as looking down at your slung load). This is perfect for teaching the basics of vertical reference.

The HELIMOD Mark III has attachment points on the base of the unit for easy integration with motion platforms such as the D-Box system shown in the image below. The three actuators provide important pitch, roll, heave and vibration cues. This is particularly important when used with Virtual Reality to form congruency between what the pilot sees and his or her vestibular system, thus reducing the likelihood of dizziness or disorientation. There is also provision for the integration of a Buttkicker low-frequency sound system for additional vibration and sound cues.

The Medallion Foundation maintains a fleet of Precision Flight Controls’ simulators at ten locations throughout the state of Alaska. The simulators are made available to operators under the direction of the Medallion Foundation Star and Shield program. These systems are mainly used by members of the Alaska Air Carriers Association (AACA) for accident prevention training (CFIT), by CFI’s for flight training, and by private and commercial pilots for instrument proficiency and currency. For the past year, we have researched general aviation flight simulator manufacturers.
